Week 1 EDLD 5366

St Matthew's Passion, in a Passionale

Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity in publications. The use of CRAP was the topic of this week.   The picture above is from 1110 A.D. and is an account of the life of a Monk.  Before reading the manuscript I noticed the use of color and the picture in this ancient document.  The use of color and different font styles was the contrast in the piece.  The repetition was the 2 columns on the page with the same font style for the information section.  This also led to the alignment.  The two columns were very uniformed and the font was the same throughout.  For the proximity, I noticed the picture and color used at the beginning of the manuscript but also the two columns were evenly spaced which was common for written works of this time period.  The author of the manuscript took time in making sure that the heading and the content were separated by different fonts and colors.  This shows the detail and patience it took to create this document.

  1. Very good summary Chris! Do you have the link to the manuscript? I wish the pic was a little bit bigger--but that is because I'm getting older and can't see without my glasses ;)

  2. Great post Chris. As far as I can tell you hit all of the requirements of this weeks lesson. I can only hope that all of this graphic design stuff starts to make more sense to me soon.
